We’ve managed to sit down with Dave Senior, our Transport Manager, to get some insight into his day-to-day life at TEPS and what challenges and positives come with the job. Oh, and of course, he lets us in on why he’s been at TEPS now for over 40 years.
Thank you for sitting down with me today, Dave. First things first, I want to know how long you have been here at TEPS and why have you stuck around so long.
Well, if you can believe it, I have been here at TEPS for 41 years. I started on a work experience from a training school when I was 16 and stayed here afterwards, I haven’t looked back since.
There’s no better feeling than working for a family business, you feel safe and secure and there’s always a good atmosphere. I’ve worked with Geoff Fordon, father of the current Managing Director, Paul Fordon, so I’ve known the family as I’ve worked here.
My first impression is one I’ll always remember. I came in for my interview and was told to wait for a while in the office as Geoff was currently out of the office and they couldn’t find him. They came back 30 minutes later and asked me to come back tomorrow as a driver had gone off sick and Geoff had decided to drive one of the trucks back to the Grimsby for our customer. I knew straight away that this business would do anything for one another and our customers.
As Transport Manager, what are your main duties in the role?
Well in my team we all have similar roles, in which we all share the work. There’s a whole lot of teamwork that goes on in our office. Some of the job parts have got easier since I first started working at TEPS with the technological advancements, but the legislation has made it harder, like with everything here at TEPS, you work through it.
So, what would a typical start to the day look like for you?
I usually get into the office at 7:30 am and my first thing is to check my emails as you never know what issues have arisen during the night that need your focus first thing. This job isn’t a 9-5, you are always on 24/7 in case someone needs something.
You’ve been at TEPS for many years, what’s your ultimate favourite thing about working here?
I’m going to go with every day is different, that’s what makes it exciting.
What would you say are the biggest challenges in your role as Transport Manager?
I think just keeping everyone happy. That means our drivers and my colleagues. If everyone is happy and fulfilled in what they are doing, we can deliver our best service to our customers.
Let’s get to know you more, what do you get up to outside of work?
To name a few, I’m the biggest supporter of Hull City, home and away, so I will always be at games outside of work. Another is my family, I’m grateful to have 3 children and 5 grandchildren so time with them is key for me outside of work.
Lastly, tell me a fun fact about yourself.
I have been mistaken a few times for Paddy McGuinness… lol.
